Thank you for this clear teaching Jean. You have a gift. 🙂

“…so none of us acquires a belief in Jesus through human means.”

I take this for granted. I’ve done a lot of hand wringing in the past about not believing “enough”.

  2. Jean says:

    Thanks Joel!

  3. JoelG says:

In light of the Holy Spirits work of always pointing to Jesus in a kind of a Divine Shyness (as alluded to by J.I. Packer in the clip from the links), what should we make of churches that claim to be more Spirit-filled than others. I’ve found this to be odd. If church preaches Christ alone, then the Spirit is there, no?

  4. JoelG says:

I’m referring to churches and denoms that claim to be more “charismatic”.

  5. Jean says:

    Joel,

“what should we make of churches that claim to be more Spirit-filled than others.”

You can probably imagine. But seriously, I would begin the discussion by noting that the Holy Spirit who is called paraklētos is a person. A “He”. Sometimes I think some Christians think the Holy Spirit is a divine energy which comes and goes in various quantities, like smoke.

If we recognize the Holy Spirit as one of the three Persons of the Trinity, then we would say that He is either present or He’s not present. In other words, He is never 1/3 present or 1/2 present.

The other thing that sounds off about the churches you describe is that some of them give the impression that the Holy Spirit is an independent operator, and not part of the one Divine Essence of God. Jesus said that the Holy Spirit will take what is His and declare it to you. The Word and the Spirit are always together.

Maybe a church would be better off asking if they have a Christ filled church? By that I mean, do they gather together around Christ and His Word, which brings the Spirit, for the purpose of receiving God’s gifts?

“No one will be able to escape sin, death and hell, nor enter heaven, who does not hear and submit to the Holy Spirit.” … amen

there is more to be said (and unpacked) on the word “hear” … do we confuse “feel” with “hear?” i think we do (although if you do hear IMX, you’re gonna feel something 🙂 )
the Divine Shyness mentioned by JoelG from the earlier link to Packer’s words might, IMHO, might better be described as Holiness? … sometimes, i feel that we confuse God’s grace with an attribute of indulgence, which is not an attribute of God that i know of…

so glad to see the PhxP turning attention to this subject in such a sober and reverent manner here

  7. em... again says:

Rom 8:16 … “The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God”
a word search on any Bible reference on line makes it crystal clear that the Spirit, is a Being, not a magic vapor of some kind…
