Our lives are occupied territory…
occupied by a cacophony of voices,
and the din outdoes us.

In the daytime we have no time to listen,
beset as we are by anxiety and goals
and assignments and work,
and in the night the voices are so confusing
we can hardly sort out what could possibly be your voice
from the voice of our mothers and our fathers
our best friends and our pet projects,
because they all sound so much like you.

We are people over whom that word shema has been written.
We are listeners, but we do not listen well.

So we bid you, by the time the sun goes down today
or by the time the sun comes up tomorrow,
by night or by day,
that you will speak to us in ways that we can hear
out beyond ourselves.

It is your speech to us that carries us where we have never been,
and it is your speech to us that is our only hope.
So give us ears.

Amen.

  1. “We are people over whom that word shema has been written.”

since i try to not ‘amen’ carelessly, i realized that i needed to be clear on what i understood of “shema” … maybe i’m not the only one?

makes me aware of my need – of the teaching in and the application of John 3 … i am no Enoch … my hope is in Christ Jesus … and so is my life

    thank You, Lord

  2. Stopping in to ask for prayer … not looking good for much of the east coast. Please keep us in prayer tonight & for the next few days. So far we are weathering the storm here at home in Mauricetown … although that could change. All the news hype aside … I’ve never seen anything like this … pressure is so low … anyway .. prayer appreciated. Thanks.

    nancy

  3. praying with you, Nancy

  4. Praying here too, Nancy!

  5. praying here also.

  6. Much love, Nancy. Praying. Keep us posted.

  7. Thanks … things are already looking very nasty just east of us on the southern NJ barrier islands … areas started flooding this afternoon. No doubt at this point there will be lots of damage there … hopefully everyone heeded the mandatory evacuations. So far no notice to leave my area … so we are hunkered down … ready as we can get for the inevitable loss of power for most likely at least several days. Double batch of brownies is almost ready to come out of the oven. 🙂

  8. Oh … almost forgot … when the electric goes out … I won’t be able to check in … so you may not hear from me for awhile unless we get use of a generator …

  9. Praying here as well, nancy!

  10. Praying for you and yours Nancy.

  11. Praying

  12. Thanks for all the prayer! We managed to get some sleep … house is holding up so far … no big trees down … & only one leaking window … so far so good. That’s the good news … the bad news is Sandy’s eye will pretty much go right over us later today … starting at a full moon high tide … & keep pounding for awhile … lots of water & high winds for an extended time … That will be seriously no fun. The only good thing for us here in the southern most parts of New Jersey is it doesn’t seem like Sandy will run up the Delaware Bay … so water shouldn’t be pushed too much up the bay & the Maurice River bank should hold. Downed trees & water coming up from the back of our property seem to be our greatest concerns … time will tell. Continued prayer appreciated. Thanks!

  13. Oh … Christine needs prayer … she lives about as close to the water as I do … but she is on the worst side of Sandy … north Jersey will see stronger winds.

Also .. an old friend of mine … Butch … stayed in Sea Isle City … one of NJ barrier islands … he’s already surrounded & we are hours from high tide & Sandy’s full force.

  14. Still have power … YAY! 🙂

  15. I’m sure the news is showing this … but they are not just showing the low sections for drama. I’m seeing photos from friends … recognize areas that are not known for flooding … all the towns along the New Jersey coast … from Cape May all the way up are already underwater … dunes are breeched … make that gone … no protection left … & Sandy hasn’t really hit yet & it’s low tide … this is going to be ugly for many many people. It’s going to be a long night … followed by a long day …

  16. praying still, Nancy – God keep

  17. Thanks Em … still safe here …

  18. May run up the Delaware Bay … lowest pressure ever … eye is about 30 miles off shore right now … I’m getting nervous …

  19. Things are amazingly calm right now … although I know that’s just temporary … I still feel better … sorry for the panic …

  20. Pretty sure we are in the eye of Sandy … a weird calmness …

  21. Joining in prayer, Nancy. Stay safe please.

  22. nancy, i think you are amazing – and panic seems very logical when the wind blows the hard and water comes up with force and you feel so impotent and vulnerable – prayer continues for miracles now

  23. Thanks Em … sound of the wind in this old house can be a bit unnerving … the house sings … not a pretty song. 🙂 Anyway … so far still have power … total miracle … it blinks here & there but has miraculously stayed on … house is dry … neighbors seem okay … but we’re getting pounded again by the tail end of Sandy. The eye of the storm was a nice break … although I have to admit not a totally relaxing thing because you know it’s so temporary. Anyway … continued prayers appreciated …

  24. Sorta small compared to the entire east coast, but my wife has a cat that is going to die. Likely tomorrow. She hand raised it. If anyone ever read her posts here, you know she loves animals. LOVES animals. Cat’s name is Taylor. I named him after my favorite guitar.

  25. Thanks for the updates Nancy…. praying for you.

Reuben….. prayers for Mrs Reuben and a calm exit for Taylor….love cats…. so sad when they leave us…. God bless you.

My beautiful young friend Shawna Malland has been dealing with advanced cancer for over a year. She is at the end stage and is in hospital in intense, unmanageable pain.
Please pray for God’s mercies, dear saints….. and a peaceful entrance into her ‘non-terrestrial” home. Very heartbreaking story…. She is a former CC pastor’s wife, betrayed and abandoned…… but full of unchanging faith…… She’s only 36,leaving kids age 10 and 8….. and her darling new husband, only married 2 years. Huge tragedy.

  26. Reuben … praying for your wife’s dear kitty … & praying for Mrs Reuben too … so so hard … especially when you hand raise them .. love kitties. 🙁

  27. Paige … praying .. 🙁 (hugs) to you …

  28. praying with all, especially for Paige’s dear friend – as you pray for a peaceful exit for the kitty, could you remember a good horse named Suds whose painful cancer is trying to come back?

God keep all safe and comforted

  29. praying this late evening.

  30. Today was the first day of my new gig. Went pretty well I think.
Spent most of it in orientation and it’s hard to mess that up 🙂
This project is in the town where my friends from the “webchurch” I used to hang out are located. I’ve spent the last two nights out with friends from that place catching up with them.
Has been bittersweet as my friend who pastored that group is moving out of town to Orange County so the group is official over although he planted two other churches here in the past few years that will continue.
One of those churches is in the worst part of town and meets in a park every week. I’m planning on getting hooked into that group and helping out where I can. Tonight he and I talked about some ideas for getting some things going down there like a community based medical clinic (not seeing how that would happen because hospitals down’t work like that…too much malpractice potential) and a food pantry.
They had a food pantry going for a while, but some how the delivery truck stopped delivering stuff to the place they were using. All this stuff is community driven and I’m not sure that they have a clue what they are doing. LOL…
I’m kinda thinking that this particular timing and this particular job location didn’t happen accidently. I think I have a role in helping continue what he started here, I’m just not sure what exactly that looks like. I would love to be able to see this group get a food pantry, or something of significance started here.
They are also talking about maybe working with the school kids to do some tutoring or maybe adults working with English as a second language. Not sure…
Anyway…I’d like to say thanks to those of you that are praying about the job stuff for me. I’m still a bit nervous and uncertain about what is expected, but feeling more calm about it after the last two nights of dinners with friends…but also, please pray for my involvement here and where I can help out most.
And, please keep my friend in prayer as he and his wife move to a new area where he is really not sure what his next move will be either vocationally or in ministry.
    Rambling….

  31. Well … it was an adventure I don’t want to repeat … but made it through Hurricane Sandy unharmed & with no major damage … neighbors are all fine too … praise God! From what I can tell … we took a direct hit … eye came ashore in a direct line over us … hit the barrier islands then us … not that it really made much of a difference in this huge storm … but still amazing to think we faired so well … shore points are a different matter … huge loses. As soon as we are able … I will be going with my cousin as she returns to what is left of her home in Sea Isle City … not good for her to face that alone. 2 other family homes on the island are vacation homes … sad but not the same as major damage to your full time home. My cousin lives along & has MS … this is going to be difficult. At the very least her home was/is filled with a lot of salt water … continued prayer appreciated for her as well as the countless others along the east coast who have sustained a great deal of damage from this massive storm.

Thanks so much for helping me get through this. Greatly appreciated!

  32. nancy, glad to hear you made it through okay.

  33. London, God bless and keep you in your new work situation … look out Southern(?) California, here comes London

  34. My husband’s father has to go to the hospital suddenly yesterday because the doctor found blood clots in his lungs. They had to put a filter in him to keep another clot in him from getting to his lungs. He seems to be doing all right, and was pretty peppy when we went and saw him yesterday evening, but it’s still a pretty scary and serious thing. My husband’s mom was very shaken up. Both of them could use prayers.

  35. Lord, have mercy on J2’s father in law.

  36. j2, praying.

  37. praying here too j2

  38. I’m filled with a very thankful heart this morning as well as a grieving heart for those who did not come through this storm as well as me & my family. Despite our location my family came through this storm without much damage to their property even though we are so close to mass destruction. We’re tired … both physically & emotionally … we have some clean up to do … but all in all we are so relieved. But … many very close by have suffered great loss … there is much work to do … & it’s going to take a long time.

Thank you all for your prayers … I know I have witnessed many miracles the past few days …

  39. J2 … praying …

  40. Prayer appreciated again for the east coast. Things are growing increasingly difficult … needs are great … so many … but the biggest is power outages that leads to other issues … can’t pump gas … hard to clean up … repair … stay warm … food storage & prep …not only is the task enormous but red tape is standing in the way as well … so sad .. not to mention people are getting angry. Help is being turned away for political reason … so frustrating. Power really needs to be returned as soon as possible so full force clean up efforts can be made. It’s cold … people are getting sick not only from the cold but conditions are just nasty. Sewage gets mixed in with the water that flooded homes … water supplies compromised … & if cleanup is delayed … power out etc … things just keep getting worse in those areas. Now … they are tracking a nor-easter … may hit the extremely vulnerable east coast sometime this week. Can’t even think about the damage that even a small storm would cause at this point … many barriers from the ocean & bays … dunes .. sea walls … bulkheads … have been badly damaged … or totally destroyed … add foundation issues not repaired to many homes/structures … prayer appreciated.

  41. Hey … forgot to mention … on a good note … I am very pleased to say … some area churches seem to be putting aside differences & are joining together to help out those in need in the best possible way … huge praise!
