  1. Im actually going to listen to this one. Anyone who casts off the notion that “word, prayer, and fellowship” solves all depressions and addictions has my vote. The filth FRC promotes as “biblical counseling” actually kills people. There are pulpit pounders who need to be in jail right now.

  2. “Making the problem much worse.” Precisely. When you have made people fail god, pastor, church, themselves, you have turned them to one solution, and that is what you call dying well. There is no way to die right that way. I have seen teens get the biblical counseling god want’s them to have, and take their own lives. This topic infuriates me because it is scientifically proven to be detrimental to humans in too many ways.

You are created sick, and commanded to be well already, don’t compound it with god’s disapproval, people’s disapproval, the church’s disapproval of your ability to get well.

  3. I guess I was cutting Piper too much slack. You guys are right. Those tweets were dangerously ignorant of Christians who struggle with mental illness. I’m grateful for my medication and I know that whenever I forget to take them my day is miserable regardless of my faith.

    Thanks for the podcast.

  4. Hi Joel,

It isn’t just Piper…..there is so much more of this dangerous faith destroying theology out there.

    Thanks for listening!!

  5. One very simple logically fallacy in “the church” I’ve never (nor will) understand…
A person wants to or has become a foot doctor – “Praise the Lord brother/sister!” (setting aside I’ve never heard a pastor “Praise the Lord” about someone wanting to flip burgers, but I digress).
A person wants to or has become a plastic surgeon, or heart doctor, etc., I’ve NEVER heard a pastor wanting to “minister” in place of those positions.
However, the mind is THE MOST IMPORTANT organ, it controls EVERYTHING in the body (not to mention is the only organ to directly impact the rest of society – you never hear of someone’s ill foot causing a school shooting, ill minds do all the time), and yet someone with a “degree” (memorized Chuck Smith tapes) puts himself in place of mental health experts.
When are pastors going to start fixing my car?!!!
    : )

  6. Diagnosing the “mind issues” of others is one area where you need no formal training or expertise, that’s true. But that doesn’t mean all advice is equally helpful or valid! Far from it.
