Despite whatever I might think of Paige Patterson, leave him alone. Preaching and teaching has its own built in disciplinary process. Crowds, age, and whoever he answers to can deal with him. He’s an old stump in the plowman’s path. Dynamite is dangerous and has ramifications. Let him rot in the field.

The article about growth gap between mega churches and smaller ones was a bit depressing to me. I just get the feeling one of these groups is probably doing church wrong but what do I know.

I liked the Roger Olson piece on universalism.

Especially the point that if you’re not a Xn universalist, you certainly should wish that
    all will be redeemed.

    bob1,

    Agree on both counts…

Just a note about the links…these are to stimulate thought and conversation.
I don’t necessarily agree with the content.

  7. John 20:29 says:

I keep getting interrupted reading what seems to be a good link on hell… but it escapes me how anyone blames Christians as unloving for accepting the teaching of hell (i don’t know how God works the problem, but little ones, baptized or not do not go to hell, btw). We don’t know for certain who is consigned there, but our task is to make real the love of God and fact of judgement. IMNSHO
That said, anyone who gloats over the prospect of hell totally misses the reason and the cost of the crucifixion of God’s son.

i’ve been too pontificatorial today – sorry

I’d tried to become a universalist but failed. It would still thrill me to discover that God was one…

  9. John 20:29 says:

I don’t think it would thrill me if God offered our world a blanket pardon with no new birth involved… we’d have just what we’ve got now… further, how could we respect, let alone worship a god who winked at most of the behaviors we identify as sin…
Your neighbor just murdered his family? No matter, the next generation will do better… come to think of it, if we’re all in the afterlife, murder isntt possible…. have to use a different sin, i guess…. Oh well… 🙆

“The Student Press Coalition (SPC) promotes a free press in higher education through research and advocacy on issues related to media censorship in Christian colleges and universities.
In Spring 2018, SPC conducted a survey of student editors at Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU) school publications to learn more about their university’s student press policies and practices. Here is a bit of what we found:”

“What is that to you? Follow me!” That sounds good and right, yet the part that needs to be balanced is accountability of leadership when they are fleecing the flock or abusing the followership.

One of my daughters attends Grand Canyon University, but not because it may or may not beat out Liberty for world’s largest Christian university. Not even sure we knew about that. I don’t understand why Christians get into pissing matches over such things. Like jr. high boys in a gym locker room. Mine is bigger than yours. Good grief!!!

  16. Martin Luther's Disciple says:

    Captain, your what? 😉

  17. Kevin H says:

    MLD,

It was clear from the Captain’s comment that the jr. high boys were arguing about whose university is bigger. You hear that stuff all the time from boys in the jr. high locker room – “My favorite Christian university, Liberty, is bigger than your favorite Christian university, Grand Canyon.” C’mon, get with it. 🙂

  18. Nathan Priddis says:

    @ Cap’n.
I take it neither you, nor any junior high friends, ever took a whizz on an electric fence. There are somes things in life you just do.. and our’s is not to question why.

  19. Martin Luther's Disciple says:

I don’t know how you are to have accountability in the congregations when the leadership is so debased.
I remember when I was SBC for 13 yrs and Baylor University allowed coed dorms and how they conceded that they would not restrict students hanging Playboy centerfold on their dorm room walls. This was early 90s.

  20. filbertz says:

the junior high boys in my classes are all up each other’s faces about Grand Canyon and Liberty…whisper matches, cross-eyed looks, even thumb wrestling over which is better. I’m on the fence quietly rooting for Moody Bible Institute…only because the word “Moody” is soooo with-it.

Gibson Files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
Some of you guitar collectors/fans/players may have seen this headline. Looking at their prices, I am not in the least bit surprised, but that may not be why the chapter 11 filing. Talked with a Guitar Center associate today and he stated that Gibson has actually seen in increase in guitar sales. I’ve been thinking of purchasing a Gibson Les Paul Custom sometime in the next few years, but man are they $$$$$!!!

  23. Josh the Baptist says:

    that’s a shame.

  24. Dan from Georgia says:

    Josh,

It sounds like Gibson is going to sell off just about all their “side” businesses like audio and such to pay off their creditors, whom they are deeply in debt to, and reorganize to focus primarily on guitars. I hope they do survive, but I also hope they see that they can’t keep producing instruments sooooo expensive that most people will not shop Gibson but will find good and great guitars (and basses!) for half the price from other companies. But hey, I am not economically savvy, just a wary consumer.
