TEMA_201412This story is being widely and frequently accessed via the archives, so I’m reposting it with an update.

 

 

 

From 2003-2008 one of the stories that dominated this blog was that of the controversies surrounding what was then known as the Calvary Satellite Network.

The massive radio network had been a joint venture between Chuck Smith’s son Jeff and the pastor of Calvary Chapel Twin Falls, Mike Kestler, a venture funded by Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa.

Kestler’s career had almost been short circuited by accusations of immoral behavior from one of his congregants, but Chuck intervened with his board to save him.

He came to regret having done so, as more accusations surfaced and came to a head with a lawsuit filed against Kestler by an employee who claimed she was fired for turning down Kestler’s advances.

Smith bankrolled that suit for a while and it was later settled out of court.

After a series of lawsuits the empire was divided, the name “Calvary” was removed from the church and the radio network, but both survived and remained under the control of Mike Kestler.

Today, the radio side is the “Christian Satellite Network“, the church “River Christian Fellowship”.

Oddly enough, the network still flies the dove in their logo.

Kestler, who had hosted the networks call in show ‘To Every Man An Answer”, left the airwaves a few years ago amidst all the scandals.

He’s back…

He returned to the air Monday after being divorced from his wife and having remarried someone 38 years his junior.

The couple has a child that sources say was conceived before the divorce proceedings were final.

His return has resulted in the resignation of one board member of the network and at least one of the former hosts of the program.

The only remaining questions are how many others associated with the network will have the moral integrity to resign as well, and how many broadcasters will continue to run their programs on the network.

For now, Kestler will be answering your bible questions live every day at 3:00 P.M. Pacific.

You should probably ask another pastor about family and marriage issues…

Update: Most of the co-hosts have resigned with the notable exception of Leo Giovinetti.

We’ve been asked about former co-host Steve Matheson.

Matheson was also involved in an adulterous affair and was removed from his pastorate and is now divorced from the wife of his youth.

    I’ve known & know others with this sort of hutzpah and shamelessness…. It’s just shocking that someone who supposedly reads the Bible, yet just keeps on and on like this, instead of hiding in a corner somewhere, pouring out tears of regret and remorse and apologizing to everyone they ever encounter.

Michael, what mystifies me is how a ‘pastor’ or ‘preacher’ can be so deaf to the Holy Spirit, so defiant in the face of Scripture and so arrogant to resist common sense and rebuke…. and keep going ‘in the Name of the Lord’…. You know what I mean, and to whom I am referring… It’s absolutely baffling to me…..

    That theory is that God disciplines His kids and if someone is allowed to continue on in sin without discipline…they may want to worry about their souls.

  14. If all the other pastors who believe in “Biblical marriage,” would protest and say they will not pay to stay on CSN until Kestler is gone, I am betting that the $$$ will talk.

As much as I am concerned about the direction our country and culture (and even the church in some factions) is taking in regards to gay marriage and the LGBT agenda and the loss of religious freedoms, it is crap like this that really raises my ire. As a conservative evangelical, I like to think that my “family” should know and act better. And then when stuff like this happens and gains a significant acceptance (or is just acted like nothing is going on), it just really causes such a swirling of anger, concern, and disgust.

  22. Like I’ve been saying, the issue of Gay Marriage is a non-issue…so is “correct doctrine” and “correct theology” etc.

    Everyone and every Group picks and chooses what they want from the “bible” and none live life perfectly.

    At least Kestler isn’t a child abuser…just run-of-the-mill heterosexual male who likes the ladies. I can relate to that 🙂

  26. I don’t know why I felt so guilty for all those years. We’re humans and God made us human, we’re going to sin, it’s what we do.

    Calvary Chapel has made one thing very clear…it really doesn’t matter how you live or what you do or what you’ve done as long as you profess a very shallow “correct doctrine” and say a prayer once in awhile.

  31. Seriously, I really think the macro-Church belief and narrative by example and action and inaction is a much truer expression of Doctrine, Theology and Belief System than any mere words and proclamations.

    As such, Calvary Chapel’s Message is very clear: Libertine and Antinomianism.

    More and more I hunger for a genuine, unassuming Christianity without all of these professionals who make their living by trying to leech off God. I tire of the Entertain and Educate model that evangelicalism has become. We are supposed to be a family, not a concert hall or a lecture hall. In a healthy family, everyone has the right to share and to speak out against misbehavior.

    Sadly, we have become a very dysfunctional family where the crazy uncles are allowed to run amok, spouting their nonsense and behaving horribly, even as they claim God has led them in their lust and greed and deceptive teaching. Crazy uncles should be ignored, rebuked, or arrested (depending on how bad they get). They shouldn’t be given the seat at the head of the family table.

    Very sad, not just for the Church, but for the families that they have both left behind.

    Do you still have the recording of Chuck about Kestler? I remember him stating that Mike “has a problem with the ladies”. Just floored me to hear Chuck admit that….

    You’ve got a point there. I guess my heart should break for both, but the older (wife) at least owns some responsibility for the choices she has made, no matter what her life story may be that may have led her to making bad choices. The younger (daughter) is just at such an innocent age and has no idea at this point as to what is in store for her as she grows up.

  77. A few observations: It’s just plain creepy how he’s holding the child’s arm. Also, it looks like something is photoshopped between the kid and him. That’s not the girl’s hair, and its not his hair unless his barber is as blind as the board members.   78. He might be the guy to ask if you’d like to learn more about how to run people out of town if there is any risk of being held accountable. You could ask him about how to use river rocks to break car windshields, how to tie hangman’s nooses and place prominently in trees of those who may speak up, how to place dead birds in mailboxes of those willing to speak up, how to follow the cars of those willing to speak…even with small children in those cars, and how to smear anyone who threatens discovery of evil and sin.     Maybe you should read some of the scriptures on gossip…the bible speaks more on that then divorce ect. Kind David was a man after God’s heart…explain that. No one is disqualified from serving God.

    I have had sources following this since 2003…there are legal documents with most of this info.
    There are qualifications for ministry and you are disqualified if you violate them.

  129. 38 years is such a big generational spread that they will not be able to really relate to each other.

    I worked on Lido Island today, where there are a lot of generational spread marriages.

    Money apparently makes any man more attractive.

    Some of their wives look like their daughters.

    In some of the homes that I have worked in with generational spread marriages the wife is usually a “bird in a golden cage.”

    She doesn’t have to work, gets to live in a really nice large home, drive an expensive current model luxury vehicle and put up with a man who is very demanding and in most cases emotionally abusive.

    I think these women stick with the marriage because they know that eventually the old guy is going to pass away before them.

    And they will then have it all as their own property if there was no prenuptial agreement.

    There are some women who are attracted to power and authority figures and to men who have wealth.

    But usually these type of men are emotionally unavailable where as the men that are emotionally available are the opposite. No power no authority and no money, but they are emotionally available to their wives.

    With this in mind this young wife and mother is most likely in a very tough situation.

    Pray for her…

    I know one in particular right now who has been served papers for a divorce and the divorcing spouse does not have grounds and is using “irreconcilable differences” as grounds.
    That may be legal in the secular world but is this acceptable biblically?

    Too many the church organization represents God, i.e. the RCC, EO, LCMS, CC, SBC etc. but somewhere it has been forgotten it is always the people who represent God. I would even be bold enough to say those who hate God in some form or another also represent God. In the big picture of things how all of us live, treat each other and the creation we exist in show what really inside us and prove what the sages say about God to be true.

    All of us want to give the middle finger to how we are created. Why else would we get so excited about the cookie jar up high on the shelf when there are really good ones easily within reach.

    In the end the gay community, agnostics and even atheist are just as much hypocrites and fakers as those who are in the church.

For example, there are now only three shows posted for the entire month of January and only a few shows posted for February and March (2015).   233. Such a sad time in the life of Calvary Chapel. First Mike Kestler, then Bob Coy, then Steve Matheson, and now Bob Grenier. All have fallen morally and yet only Bob Coy has repented publically as far as I can tell. Steve Matheson who was on TEMA for several years ran away with his secretary at the Garden fellowship but because he is Hagerman’s son in law, the rebuke of Steve was never made public. The bible is clear to “rebuke those publically” so to make an example of those so others do not follow suit. God will surely judge these “double lives”. It’s a sad, sad day!

  243. The sermon archives from this site show that Flanders continued to preach at the church until January 22, 2012. After that point, there seemed to be a sudden and continued shift to another pastor preaching.

    This woman went missing in October 2011. He continued to preach for 3 more months. Who knows what exactly was known by who at that time. Did anyone know the newborn child was his? Obviously, just a terrible situation from what is apparently known now.

But in the eyes of the Lord, they have absolutely no right whatsoever to take on the position of a leader or a pastor. What more, to even give ear to what they have to say is being complicit in what they have done and continue to do in the midst of their congregation and among those who would bear a witness that promotes them in any way, shape, or form.

    Are we to pray for them, yes, but even more so we are to confront them and to make it clear that we will have no fellowship with them until they fully repent. Not just confessing the multitude of sins committed in the process of intentional betrayal, deception, and ultimate consummation of such treachery, but also putting away that which is not ordained by the Lord, and making whatever amends to those harmed, including publicly stating they have used the pulpit to gained what was not theirs to have and to hold.

    Are we to be angry —– absolutely! Are we to hate these things ——– God help us, if we don’t. Are we to cry out in righteous indignation—-by the Holy Spirit that dwells within us, I would hope and pray this would be so. We are to hate that which God hates and we are to speak these things for all to hear and to fear and to take careful note so that we would not fall and so that we, too would know the that it is not for us to tempt the Lord by testing Him, to see or to proclaim that we, being by nature human, can push the boundaries of His grace and what He has set forth, but instead we are to call one another to an account so that we, the church will stand up against those who would use Him to practice such things, thus leavening that which is to be kept holy and sanctified.

    Lesa, I stand with Michael on this. And so ought you do as well. If it is the name calling that you object to as seeing it as not being loving. I too, agree with Michael when it comes to this type of behavior found among leaders in the church. Your defense is not loving at all—it is enabling and it only serves to help those right into damnation and the eternal fires of hell. Think of the prophets of old. Think of those who would only speak soothing words and those who were quite straightforward in speaking truth — the latter speaking words of God given to them, by the way. Those who did not want to hear the truth sought to destroy and did destroy many of them because of those words that cut deep into the heart of those committing blasphemous things that we speak of even today being committed within the walls and the homes of those who took upon themselves to be teachers, preachers, pastors, deacons, and other type of leadership roles.

    Love is not an emotion or a feeling, although it might bring about such. Love is that which seeks/promote that which is true, right, good, pure, and holy. Love is laying down one’s own life to bear witness to that which is true, right, good, pure, and holy. Love is exposing the darkness and taking a stand against all that is evil, corrupted, and most unholy. Love is not vindictive, but rather that which seeks justice, truth, and does not shirk or hide behind a defense of not being loving, if one was to speak directly, forthrightly, or even using words that are true that plainly describes that which has caused harm to others, such as when calling someone a liar, a thief, a cheat, a scoundrel, or even a reprobate.

    To say otherwise is being manipulative and is used as an attempt to turn the table to distract while attempting to make the one doing the calling out appear to be the culprit instead. Lesa, do not buy into this crap that either of these men are fit or qualified to be restored to leadership ministerial roles. Instead, put your focus more upon the wives and children left behind and think about the “wife” swapping that is so rampant in the church. Then think about what you can do to change this in your church to help those who also have been or are being thrown under the bus, or being kept silent by simple manipulative teachings that it appears that you, yourself have bought into, such as, “pray for them,” “we all sin,” AND, “YOU, WHO ARE WITHOUT SIN, CAST THE FIRST STONE.”

    Which, by the way was the same exact manipulative tactic that Satan used with Jesus when in the desert, being tempted.

    Your reasoning is faulty:

    1) It is the Word that speaks to the heart of a person which causes them to repent and to commit their life to the Lord, not the person speaking the Word of God.

    2) God uses the repentant and unrepentant to bring people to Him.

    3) These men while committing adultery and being treacherous and corrupting were using their talents to preach the word and people were still being saved, in spite of them—not because of them.

    4) David was not a Pastor–he was a King. David repented — they have not. Uriah was murdered. Bathsheba was free to marry David. Nevetheless, the kingdom fell, the people was eventually taken into captivity, while the children suffered, one generation after the next.

    To strike out at Michael is missing the mark–perhaps in need of your own repentance, as Michael has put forth, that of idolatry, as well as, to twist scripture to justify adulterer remaining in the pulpit and leadership position, including the desire to want to sit down to eat with such who aligns themselves with a church that is practicing such things and daring to bring their worship and gifts before the Lord, upon His altar.

    How in the world can taking a stand against sexual immorality and adultery, specifically, be construed as being “unjustly angered seated upon bitterness,” when God has told us many times that for those who continue in it—-are deceived and will go to hell. Look it up, it’s all throughout the Bible—even in the latter verses of Revelation. Think about it—it’s not just the act of being sexually immoral, it goes far beyond this. It didn’t just happened, nor was it benched upon loving anyone—-including God. It was in the heart to do and in the mind to achieve, and for what purpose——-and then to cover it up and then to get people to buy into it by now legitimizing it by “marrying” another.

    As for the speck in one’s eye, it would, concerning these issues, would be far better to understand the depth and breadth of adultery and why God hates it so much. And why He speaks of it so often in so many ways: be it marriage between a husband and wife or that of spiritual adultery, which by the way has and is continuing if one leads others to believe that they have the right or can ever be restored to the pulpit, or a spiritual leadership role within the CHURCH.

Seek those.     I agree with you that Calvary Chapel is full of wolves-some obvious, some not. It’s also clear that there has been a LOT of cover up within the ranks. In fact, ironically, in Steve Matheson’s last sermon from The Garden Fellowship, he alluded to exactly that, calling out false teachers and Judas’ within the church ranks, (This came a week after he finally came out in a sermon and disagreed with Calvary’s doctrine on the pre-trib rapture)… Then he disappeared. Now he can’t be found ANYWHERE and we all accept the word of a church that is known to be corrupt as they say that he had a “moral failure.” That doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. In fact, there are people who left The Garden Fellowship over it because it didn’t make sense to them either.

    Certainly ANYONE can fall, and Steve is no exception to that, but it just seems to me that we should all have a little more discernment than to just take the word of a corrupt church and destroy a man’s reputation over it… And really, Hagerman covered for him?! Doesn’t it seem like his loyalty would lie a little more with Charity (his wife’s daughter), than the man who broke her heart and ran out on her… Let’s reason together.

    I can say from experience that corrupt churches lie (Hence their corruption) If you called my last church they’d have some equally ugly things to say about me, problem is, none of them are true. What is true is that I called out the pastor, and that’s a bad idea in a corrupt church. If Steve in fact left his family then he should be called out for what he is; but if he didn’t I would hate to be the one perpetuating a lie about a man of God… Seems to me that there should be some accountability for that too. If you’re claiming to be doing God’s work, you better do it with diligence and wisdom, because we’re told that we’ll give an account for every careless word spoken. That should put a little of the fear of God in us, if you ask me.

If you show me the evidence I will be happy to issue you an apology for questioning your integrity in calling Steve out. I am in agreement that if he was in adultery he should be called out.
    Also, Steve Wright, I can’t say I feel particularly edified by your “explanation”… Am I to assume that I am the sycophant fan base to which you refer? No matter, I guess by your logic that Elijah was just a no good “hireling” or else he never would have run from Jezabel when she was chasing him to kill him. Or David from Saul, or David from Absalom, or (albeit wrongly) all the disciples who scattered and then hid when Jesus was crucified, or the church of Acts that scattered when persecution came… Or, to use your own example, Jeremiah from Jehoiakim (Jer 36:15-26) For the record, I also have had ministry attacked by someone in sin. It’s a challenging situation to say the least. But I’m glad you’ve considered all of the variables in this case and can say so definitively what should have been done. I guess if this is showing me anything it’s that the church is by no means immune from the ugliness of chat room anonymity. Unfortunately, Jesus told us in John that they would know we are His disciples by our love for each other. I wonder what they would know if they saw this thread?

  369. I know I have been booted off here before but I have a ? in regard to what has been discussed here in Re: marrying another and then going back tot he former wife being unbiblical.

    MIchael, you stated here that he cannot go back to his first wife (in response to his being “restored to her”).

    Isn’t it unbiblical to leave the first wife and marry another without having biblical grounds to do so? (divorcing the first wife)?

    If it is true that he had no grounds to divorce his first wife, then his second marry to trophy wife is not biblical, and he is still biblically married to her (I would assume).

    Also, in regard to idolatry of celebrity Pastors, CCFL was begging BC to return for their 30th anniversary this weekend. They have no understanding that this should not even happen. They just want everything to “go away” and have him back.

She had grounds to divorce him, but he had no grounds to divorce her and marry another. At least that is my understanding. Yes, the state can marry him again, but in the eyes of God I thought he would still be married to the first.

    I join with the many that see this condition in the law specifically to discourage hasty divorce. Adultery does not MANDATE divorce…however, if that is the course taken there are consequences and if one then marries another, there can be no hope for reconciliation.

    Although I do not think the Law is prescriptive for us today, it remains holy, just and good. I have used those verses in talking to someone who is divorced and still waiting for their ex who has remarried, had children and moved on with life…to eventually be divorced (presumably by God’s hand in answer to prayer) so there could be a remarriage. Nope.

I would think that if the adulterer or adulteress used man’s laws to marry another, in God’s eyes they are not married, therefore, they each have defraud one another, therefore, are able to view this as simply being two harlots living together and playing house. Thus, just as the old testament told the men to put away their pagan wives, so too, they could simply get an annulment, even though in man’s court, it was legal, however, in God’s eyes, the real marriage was to the spouse betrayed. Just a thought——-

    If God does not recognize the marriage, then why would we in terms of telling anyone, basically, “too bad, what is done cannot be undone,” when in truth, if the betrayed spouse elected not to divorce them, the best option would be to dedicate themselves to earning the trust they violated in order win their spouse and to prove to them, they are safe and will not longer jeopardize their safety and security again. Love is a choice and yes, the unfaithful spouse will need to for once in their life love that spouse enough to lay their pride and ego aside while committing to keep those vows and to put a huge notice up: not available in any way, shape, or form.

    Either this or wait for the faithful spouse to die——of course the unfaithful spouse could take their chances and die first. Hmmmmm.

    Well said, Steve. I am a believer in one strike and you are out. Yet I do confess that I know of a few exceptions to my opinion because certain men that I know of personally have demonstrated a life of repentance and faithfulness in their walk and service. I can count them on one hand.

    However, this idea of getting divorced, leaving the church, and then coming back in a year or two is ridiculous. This idea does not make me popular with many of my colleagues who advocate unlimited grace to our fallen brethren, particularly, if they were considered a “good teacher” and had a large following. The reality is boys, a ‘good teacher “ keeps his pants zipped up.

    Adultery is a manifestation of a critical flaw in one’s Christian experience. And it is rarely, if ever, limited to their unfaithfulness toward their spouse. Adultery exploits both the wife and the other woman. It is dehumanizing as both women (or men) become objects for pleasure and necessity. It is an indication that one does not value or has forgotten respect for another human being that is created in the imago Dei as they seek to feed the appetitive part of their soul. What I have observed is that most pastors that I personally know who had committed adultery in the past and were “restored” to [senior] pastoral ministry are very heavy handed, tyrannical and treat people (some even in their personal relationships) disrespectfully and as a means toward an end, rather than as the loving shepherd they were initially called to be.

    God spoke to Balaam through an ass, but I think He desires to speak to His church through a more suitable vessel, but that’s just me.

  378. Crazy conversations, digesting all of it. As a former student of Steve Matheson I spent nearly 2 years under his tutelage. And this pretty much is a harsh cross roads. I don’t see anything biblical about a Pastor being restored to his position. I believe you better have your proverbial ducks in a row and be ready for the challenge.   383. I am deeply saddened by these pastors/ teachers sin! I know Jesus gives GRACE GIFTS TO ALL BELIEVERS when they are saved…. It is FOR THE EDIFYING OF THE CHURCH.
    Pastors/Teachers is one of those GIFTS. I do not know of any Scriptures that speaks about these grace gifts being removed forever after a great sin has taken place . King David sinned greatly and suffered many consequences for his sin; he lost his child and was broken hearted and even separated from God for little while. But he was USED again to edify the church… His fall didn’t disqualify him rather it showed Gods faithfulness and ability to use a fallen sinner to glorify HIM.. We now have many Psalms that to this day still MINISTER AND TEACH us GOD TRUTHS. I dont believe we have the power to disqualify somebody if God has gifted them to teach. THEIR GIFT( from God) is still in them…so IF they ever truly repentant I believe they can be reinstated by God (not by man) ➡️Roman12, Eph 4, 1Cor 12 GRACE gift scripture.

    Jesus’ GIFT to these men and the church was perfect ! But the vessel was not!

My parents went through it and I saw what my mother went through and as children, what we went through. Also my mother’s first pastor left his wife and ran off with the church secretary. After that, she didn’t attend any church for years. Even when she did finally begin to attend a church (20 years later) she was very withdrawn and cautious.

If the rumors are true (and I called his church and I believe they probably are), he can be restored, but not to a leadership or teaching position within the church. I am becoming more and more convinced that this is the main reason God wants us in fellowship, and not primarily listening to radio or celebrity preachers we don’t know. We should all be studying the New Testament pattern, which clearly taught a plurality of oversight and close fellowship. We should be getting fed by those we know are walking with the Lord and qualified to be elders and teachers.

  464. Anyone can sin? Everyone sins. All sin and fall short of the glory of God. By your reasoning none can be qualified to be a pastor or to teach. Sin once of any magnitude and you are a sinner forever, guilty of sin, redeemed only by the blood of Christ. I’m curious, where do you get that criteria from the scriptures? Moses was a murderer, yet look at what he did afterward. David was an adulterer and a murderer and God did not cast him off, in fact he was called a man after God’s own Heart. There were consequences for the sins, but they served God tremendously after significant sin. How is any Christian instantly disqualified by our sin nature? God desires mercy, not sacrifice- not for Him but from us. The series of comments I’ve had time to read here are far from merciful. they are hate filled, judgemental and bitter. Most are the precepts of man, not from the Word of God. Kestler has paid, and will have consequences meted out by God in eternity- he has salvation, but the rewards he could have enjoyed will be diminished. Based on scripture, the hate motivated attacks and self righteousness expressed here, will entitle the commenters to the same loss of rewards, eternal consequences await many commenters here. Worse yet, there are people here who are clearly self justified who will hear the worst statement possible, “Depart from Me, I never knew you.” That is for eternity, and I don’t want that for anyone, especially for those who think they are doing the right thing. My admonishments here are to encourage repentance by those who do not know scripture as well as they boast. John, your comments indicate you haven’t listened to Kestler’ sermons, which I don’t care for, but are Biblically sound and his answers on To Every Man an Answer, which are solidly based in scripture (which he references), and when the scriptures aren’t clear about an issue, Kestler is very clear about what is his opinion and Biblical.

Your radio preachers will tell you this is a hold-over from Roman Catholicism and Bible study is what it's all about nowadays. They are wrong.

  474. Xenia, I don’t think you listen from your comment. Most of the broadcasts are church sermons on various topics. Fellowship is absolutely critical, isolation is precarious for every Christian, but for the home bound, traveler, or someone who has to work on Sundays this is a great source of teaching. They have Jack Graham, Adrian Rogers and J. Vernon McGee rebroadcasts, Dr. Robert Jeffress and many other sound teachers honestly teaching the Word of God. If you aren’t in the right church, turn on your radio and listen to good things from the word.

    I clearly understand what you are saying. Moses as a murderer clearly should have been disqualified from the get go. Paul, “breathing murder for the saints” as well, complicit in the murder of Stephen too. Peter? Clearly should have been disqualified, a confessed sinner, and three time denier of Christ. Jonah- openly defied God’s commandment to preach to Nineveh to repent, then even pouted when Nineveh repented in sack cloth and ashes, I’m sorry disqualified on principle alone. God has used flawed people all through history, simply because there are nothing but flawed human beings to work with. The only two people in the Bible who have no flaws mentioned about them are Joseph and Daniel.
    The fact is CSN serves God in spite of anyone affiliated, God is greater than all of that. If God wanted to take it out He would. I don’t personally care for Kestler’s preaching style, as a sinner (like us all) he does stay true to the Bible in spite of his flaws. The word goes out in tracts, street corner preachers, co-workers, tragedies and miracles- in every way God sees fit. CSN as a network lets me listen to Biblical teaching everywhere I have to travel rather than listening to commercial radio or KLOVE (which is good). Pilgrim Radio is limited but good as well. God used a donkey to speak to Balaam, surely Kestler fits that criteria.
    If Christ himself said “But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses.” I’ll take His word over yours every day. Christ also answered Peter’s question “How many times should I forgive my brother, seven times?” with the instruction “Surely I say to you seventy times seven.” That basically means continuously. That also includes Kestler.
    I don’t mean to stir up hostility, I am a sinner, flawed beyond hope, saved only by grace and the shed blood of Jesus Christ, and committed to the truth as revealed in the Holy Scriptures. God bless you richly my brother in Christ.

  478. Since I don’t know this Mr. Kestler at all, I’ll tell a true story about another sexual predator and you tell me what you think.

    I used to be the director of a home school group and we had a yearly camping trip. One year, one of the moms called me up to inform me that she was inviting a man I’ll call “Fred” to camp with us. Fred just got out of jail. He was a pastor who had been convicted of pedophilia. I said “No way, don’t bring this guy.” She gave me the same forgiveness spiel we can read in the some the posts here. I said, “Ok, he’s forgiven but he can’t come to our camp out where there are dozens of little kids in swimsuits.” She went on and on about “God has forgiven him, why can’t you?” and I said “Don’t bring him.”

    Well she brought him. And you will not be surprised to hear that he spent all his time down at the riverside with the little boys in swimsuits. It was so obvious that one of the dads had to be restrained for getting getting into a fight with him. After a few hours of watching this guy in action, everyone knew to keep their kids (boys) away from him and that put a serious damper on the camp out. And it was the last camp out that group ever had because if I couldn’t prevent pedophiles from coming there wasn’t going to be a camp out. period.

    So tell me, would you send you little boys to a day-care center where this man was a worker? No? Where’s your forgiveness?

    Sexual predators come in many categories. Some like little boys and some like needy Christian women. They can be forgiven but they can never be trusted.

Kestler was apparently involved with an adult woman when he fathered a child out of wedlock, and worse, while still married to his first wife. Power has been shown to be attractive, and often with less than righteous and Godly outcomes. First and second Corinthians provide guidance on sin within the body of followers of Christ, from admonition to expulsion to forgiveness and restoration. Does that mean punishment is skipped over lightly? No. Just as David sinned and received grace, he endured the punishment from God of the loss of his illegitimate son and subsequent implosion of his family. The example of David is completely dismissed by another above “because David wasn’t no priest”, yet he was a significant “man after God’s own heart” sin and all, and he was permitted to eat showbread which was reserved only for priests. He was also a significant prophet with Psalm 22 (among others) being huge.
    This blog is disturbing in the outright claims that Kestler (and by inference any other sinner) is disqualified forever after sin. The logic is shallow, we are all sinners and the “degree” of the sin has nothing to do with it. Christ said to even contemplate adultery or murder is equal to having actually committing the sin. Equally disturbing is the absolute willingness to dismiss the scriptures and attack not only Kestler, but the Christian Satellite Network entirely with the doctrines of men. To attempt to paint the entirely of CSN’s programming with the same dirty brush is extremely careless, it is an incredible collection of some of the most cautious and comprehensive Bible scholars and teachers in the US. The attacks on scriptural based worship and study, as well as the Calvary Chapel Church are puzzling and unfounded. We should not verbally destroy any other Christians because the Pope or an elder or deacon or pastor who leads their church falls. I have attended major denominational churches where the name of Christ is not even mentioned. Calvary Chapel goes through the Bible verse by verse, line upon line, precept upon precept. The focus is consistently on Christ as revealed through the entirety of te scriptures. How is that so wrong?
    If asked for scriptural references for the exile of Kestler, no one offers any here, in fact Biblical references are mocked. This really comes down to the church where Kestler serves. If they accepted him back after 3 years, that is that congregation’s decision, regardless that the author of this blog has amassed a file of grievances against Kestler for 15 years. I might suggest he throw it away and just read the Bible with that time, God will judge Kestler. Paul explains that we will all be tried by fire, and though saved, our rewards in heaven will be determined by what remains. Perhaps in Kestler’s case all is wood stubble and straw, that is God’s judgement, not ours.
    As for your example of “Fred”, not all who profess to be Christians are, as Christ said, “Depart from Me, I never knew you.” Like the lion Peter describes, people like “Fred” will prey on those who openly love and trust, and as you rightly did, we have to protect from such agents of Satan in every disguise.

    Mr. Donahue, the congregation that chose to restore Kestler is responsible for any further failings he may be responsible for, not some Phoenix Pastor presumably in Arizona. There is a door on that church that allows the congregants to go elsewhere, as I’m sure many did.
    You are entirely disingenuous accusing me of not mentioning Christ in my response when I was called an idolater. How funny, I mention Christ and what he actually said in virtually every comment I’ve posted. Being able to count, It is TWO WORDS, JESUS CHRIST. HA!
    Enough of this. From the beginning I have been taken back by comments here that are so far from Christianity, and since many represent themselves as followers of Christ, it is only out of Christian love that I have tried to offer some corrections. We are instructed to do so, and I have tried to do that out of love.
    There are comments here stating that it is more important to attend church (and that IS important) than read the Bible, on the home page there was an article saying that the blogger hoped God would carve out an exception for a good and honest deceased news reporter who may not have been a follower of Christ.
    It’s disturbing in that this is a precise example of trampling on the Blood of Christ. This is saying that salvation is not of the finished work of Christ and His shed blood providing the remission of sin, but on someone’s works. No where in the Bible does it say there is a good guy exception. If that is the case then Christ suffered and died for nothing. Not so!
    So while Kestler is a horrible deviant, many of the doctrines that are held out here are worse. Most people are appalled that a pastor (as many pastors have) would behave in such a way, but if this website promotes ideas that would lead anyone astray from the Truth of God (ie. works might save you), or would confirm the doctrines of men that tickle the ears, those things should be a grave concern. If anyone were considering following Christ and read this blog, no one could blame them for calling Christians hypocrites. This is an abominable sin because we are called to be salt and light, this discourse couldn’t be any further from that commandment of Christ.
    Criticism is so easy, encouragement not so much.
    By way of encouragement I would like suggest that the critics here have not listened to the programming on CSN. I would encourage everyone here to listen to 8 hours of programming to be informed about what you freely criticize. You are absolutely free to take a break during Kestler’s broadcast of his Sunday services (I skip them myself) or Leo Giovanetti’s. But listen to the programming, then comment on what the radio network really does. Not all pastors are from Calvary Chapel. Being a careful student of the Bible, I have found the teachings sound and insightful. These broadcasts are not intended to replace attendance and fellowship of a local church, but as a supplement. As each ministry raises funds for their programming (Christian radio has to pay to be broadcast) they are clear that you must support your local church first, unlike many televagelists who proclaim God wants you to send your money to them.
    In my case, work has required me to travel extensively and I often have to work over 30 consecutive days. I cannot attend church as I would prefer, but I can listen to sound Biblical teaching as I travel. When a CSN station is in range, I listen to that. If it’s the Salem Radio Network I listen to that. If it is Pilgrim Radio, I listen to that. ESPN Radio? I don’t think so, I’d rather listen to myself sing, LOL.
    There are some criticisms leveled here against the late Chuck Smith and his treatment of Kestler (and others). For clarity, CSN was forced to change it’s name from Calvary Satellite Network to Christian Satellite Network and Kester’s church was forced to change their name from Calvary Chapel of Idaho Falls to The River Christian Fellowship (or to something of that affect).
    I have to go back to work. Can this dialog become productive rather than so destructive? I pray so. God bless you all.

  485. I believe BPM is a devout Christian who loves God and his neighbor. He has sympathy for a man he sees as a fellow sinner and he takes to heart Christ’s commandment to forgive the sinner. I would say he and I differ as to who needs the greatest portion of our concern. BPM cares about Mr. Kestler and believes God would give him a 2nd, 3rd, 4th – 70 x 7? chances whereas I am much more concerned about future victims.

    And if Mr. K is true to the pattern I have observed in other sexually predatory pastors I have seen over the decades, there will be new victims because he certainly appears to be a sexual predator and they will keep on predating if they are in a position of authority.

    His female victims are not free from guilt, either, of course, but how can you allow such a person to be in the position of spiritual authority where he might beguile and corrupt foolish women?

Thankfully (and probably more honestly- hopefully) this congregation is fully aware of his transgressions and are diligent in watching him and holding him fully accountable on an hourly basis. I don’t think any of us know why they would have permitted him back into a pastorship, but they did. I think it is safe to say, none of us here would be comfortable with that decision, and I personally would have left that church over this decision. I have left congregational churches over serious matters that were governed by a popular vote rather than what is true to the good news.
    The evil that men and even women these days (thinking of the teachers who make the news) perpetrate are disturbing. Assuring his repentance is impossible for all of us from a distance, and it is unlikely any of the Idaho Falls congregants ever read this. A direct correspondence with them would be more effective than this blog. So what concerns me is the various comments here that deviate so far from where it could be useful and productive. We can all fall into some form of legalism far from faith and Matthew 23:23 is instructive in many respects for us today as Christ chastens the scribes and Pharisees

    Justice and mercy and faith- these are understandable concepts, but not so easy to implement in the flesh. Justice has been dominant in this thread, being a newcomer to the discourse I was taken by the lack of mercy and the lack of faith that God is fully in control in this (and every) situation. I know I don’t have to tell you, but for others, in this situation we must pray for Kestler to be fully repentant, for his congregation to be extra protective and vigilant- not just for Kestler but regarding all other predators of every form, as I believe you do- pray for his victims, and to remember mercy as a weightier matter- for our own spiritual well being.

He divorced his wife, not the other way around. He was asked to stop representing Calvary Chapel on the radio. So, Mike Kestler wisely avoided a paternity lawsuit and child support by getting rid of his wife. Kestler’s radio station would have also been sued, as well !   489. Media ministers need tighter scrutiny in America because of the vast amount of money used for production. It’s always a temptation. Even the 700 club has close to a billion dollars in assets, yet does a good deal of begging. I’d say, the ‘bozo’ being defended here is typical of a corrupt American culture, not really that important, just another scam artist. Who cares?   490. Upon re-reading BPM’s constant defense of Mr. Kesler’s sexual abuses, I realized this fellow is an employee or associate of that religious radio station that provides programs. He expresses a consummate knowledge of all the other programs and staff of that radio station, but he never identified himself, or his association. Just another HUCKSTER. He was on here to protect the multi-million dollar institution, which is exactly my contention. Kestler is simply a boyscout compared to BPM.

It’s in the Bible brother. I think you need to prayerfully consider your non-Christian comments made in complete anonymity to all except the Creator and the One Who shed His Blood. Be careful brother, that is all I have been saying, not trying to judge you, trying to be very careful instructing you since the standard for a teacher is quite high.   493. BPM is a devout evangelical and for him, “good teaching” is of primary import. The means of transmitting this “good teaching” is of secondary importance. He cares about the message, not the messenger. The “good teaching” is going out to the world and he’s happy about that.

    I disagree that what one hears on CSN is “good teaching” but I don’t think BPM is excusing Mr. K’s bad behavior, he just believes the end justifies the means. And sometimes, it does.

They seem to be watching this blog like a hawk, and wish to protect a well-documented sex abuser. Anyone need only to search the internet about Mike Kestler’s litigation with the founder of Calvary Chapel’s Chuck Smith, and multiple sexual allegations, and his marriage to a girl 38 years younger than himself, because she was pregnant–of course you can also just listen to that fox on radio!
