Then I turned it off and turned on a podcast. Then I turned it off and turned the radio back on. Then I turned on a different podcast. I despaired to listen at all. Everything has become so frickin stupid. And I am inevitably a part. I prayed to God and despaired in front of him. If I didn’t have asthma I might be driven to be a chain smoker by all this. If I didn’t experience severe acid reflux I might be driven to become a heavy drinker. So when I parked at school I just slammed my head in the steering wheel a couple times. I felt like He looked down with his eyes of gentle fire and said YUP! The New Victor says: January 29, 2018 at 10:53 pm I’m on track to maybe retire early to my compound in Idaho to be a hermit. That may be selfish. I see the homeless compounds along the freeways in San Jose when I drive to and fro to work every day. After I get raising my kids I think I am done. But that’s not the right thing to do, even if I’m sick of all of what’s going on at the top levels of government and I want to tune out and drop out. Dan from Georgia says: January 30, 2018 at 12:43 am Hey y’all…BD, descended, and The New Victor! Up at 340am again because I just can’t seem to sleep more than 2 hours at a time…have to get up for work in an hour…12 hour shift today starting at 6am…geez am I ever going to be able to get a good 6-8 hour sleep in again? BD, I know that feeling…I sometimes can’t tear myself away from online debates/train wrecks. Martin Luther's Disciple says: January 30, 2018 at 4:24 am Its still dark so this counts as night shift. While Babs was trying to figure out the released document I was watching the ladies wrestle on WWE Raw. The Boss Sasha Banks and Asuka put on quite the match as they battle for a place in the upcoming Wrestlemania. Asuka is a fireball from Japan and undefeated in her 4 yrs with the WWE. Sasha in a 4 time champ. Asuka prevailed. And since its the night shift, the are lookers. 🙂 Dan from Georgia says: January 30, 2018 at 4:27 am MLD…hehehe… Man, I have so lost touch with the WWE/F…used to watch the WWF religiously back in the 1980s…who didn’t? Saturday Night’s Main Event…Hulkamania…The Hart Foundation to name a few… Martin Luther's Disciple says: January 30, 2018 at 4:45 am Monday nights 9pm USA Network. I didn’t have cable for 4 yrs. Used to go to my grandson’s house to watch with him. When I moved to AZ earlier last year I didn’t have cable – so in Sept I got it to watch the Dodgers make a run for the WS and then football. I think I watched 3 games and told my wife I would get rid of cable after the Super Bowl. But I do watch WWE each week. I will miss it when I cut the cable in a couple of weeks. Back to Netflix only. JD says: January 30, 2018 at 8:39 am Used to watch Freddie Blassie, Bo Bo Brazil, and Haystack Calhoun wrestle on TV from the Grand Olympic Auditorium. Along with Roller Derby featuring announcer Dick Lane. LA Thunderbirds vs. Bay Area Bombers was a big rivalry back in the day. Martin Luther's Disciple says: January 30, 2018 at 8:53 am Whoa Nellie!! Dan from Georgia says: January 30, 2018 at 9:14 am JD/MLD, were those rasslers local to the southwest U.S? I grew up watching the AWA in the Minneapolis area…Verne Gagne, Nick Bockwinkle, The Crusher, Jerry Blackwell, the Road Warriors, Jesse the Body Ventura, an occasional appearance by Andre the Giant, and a very young Terry Bollea… Martin Luther's Disciple says: January 30, 2018 at 9:26 am Dan, they probably were but when you are 10 you don’t know the difference. There is a proud history of wrestling here in the Portland / Vancouver area: home of the legendary Playboy Buddy Rose. http://www.onlineworldofwrestling.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/09.jpg Jean says: January 30, 2018 at 9:56 am Growing up in the SF Bay area, Pat Patterson and Rocky Johnson, were popular wrestlers. JoelG says: January 30, 2018 at 10:03 am Now those are some old timers Jean! John 20:29 says: January 30, 2018 at 10:11 am Someone mention Dick Lane and whoa nelllie? I remember him from the earliest days of Los Angeles tv KTLA, I think – was a hucksters for some car dealer, used to slap the hoods and exclaim whoa nellie! … clear back in the Space Cooley days 1947 and a big 12″ Admiral console 😀 bet no one can top that. .. Betty White co-hosted the afternoon movie on channel 11 or 13… Same shtick she’s had success with all her career …. Enjoying reading the night crew posts again John 20:29 says: January 30, 2018 at 10:18 am P.S. to my 17…. Just remembered what we used to call “pro wrestling” and Gorgeous George! My grandmother loved it – rooting for the good guy, in spite of t the fact that she knew it was staged… the more things change….. I preferred watching pro ice hockey… LA had a team back then Dan from Georgia says: January 30, 2018 at 11:26 am Also caught the Von Erich’s vs. The Freebirds from Texas every Saturday. JoelG says: January 30, 2018 at 11:53 am The Hart Foundation…. In a brush with greatness I was able to reach out and touch Brett Hart’s buttered up arm on the way to the ring back in the glory days of the WWF. Wrastlin has brought a lot of laughs over the years. Martin Luther's Disciple says: January 30, 2018 at 12:05 pm here are the highlights of the Asuka v Sasha Banks match last night. Ladies, here is something to aspire to Michael says: January 30, 2018 at 12:05 pm Em, LA still has a hockey team…my beloved Kings. I know nothing about wrestling and understand it’s attraction even less…but that’s my problem. 🙂 Michael says: January 30, 2018 at 12:07 pm When I was a kid in the backwoods of Oregon the radio voices of sports teams were my idols. I’ll never forget the feeling of deflation when I went to LA for the first time and found Chick Hearn doing “Bowling For Dollars” on tv… Dan from Georgia says: January 30, 2018 at 12:12 pm Michael…I compare the popularity of Pro Wrestling to Soap Operas…much the same script writing…especially in the 1990s. Michael says: January 30, 2018 at 12:16 pm Dan, It just doesn’t move me…and it was huge here all the way back in the sixties when they would do those shows in the National Guard armory. I started to like roller derby until I found out it was fake as well. I just don’t do fake… 🙂 Kevin H says: January 30, 2018 at 12:20 pm Is it still a Night Shift post if more of the comments come in during the daylight? Martin Luther's Disciple says: January 30, 2018 at 12:27 pm Michael – “I just don’t do fake…” Movies are fake – TV shows are fake. I have never heard anyone, ever say they don’t watch TV or go to the movies because it is fake. It is more choreographed than fake. You still need to lift a 350 pound guy on your shoulders and you need to climb the ropes, l eap halfway across the ring and land on another person. The physical effort is real. Actors call in stunt doubles – and they bitch and moan about politics. 😉 Michael says: January 30, 2018 at 12:30 pm MLD, I’m an odd duck…don’t care for movies or tv shows either. I’m not disputing that they are good athletes…it’s just not for me. On the other hand, I’m all for harmless diversions that bring people joy…so have it. 🙂 Martin Luther's Disciple says: January 30, 2018 at 12:35 pm Kevin H – are you tired? Were you up all night? WWE was in Philly last night – I figured you were there. Dan from Georgia says: January 30, 2018 at 12:43 pm Kevin H…I’ve been up since 330am ET so I have an excuse…and the topics are good today/last night/whatever time it is. Congrats to your Eagles! There’s an iconic sportswriter in Minneapolis that always says, every time the subject of Pro ‘rasslin comes up, “it’s all fake people!…” Actually, I think the jokes on him. Dan from Georgia says: January 30, 2018 at 12:52 pm ..meaning that it is well-know that the results are pre-determined…the athleticism isn’t always fake, and they mostly “sell” their blows (pretend it hurts them), but this sportswriter thinks that the fans are duped. It’s all fun. Kevin H says: January 30, 2018 at 1:39 pm MLD, No, no WWE RAW for me last night. Actually, never have been to a wrestling show, but certainly am aware of all the WWE activity in the city these last few days. I guess I missed John Cena (apparently a New England boy) leading the crowd in a rendition of Fly Eagles Fly. 🙂 Kevin H says: January 30, 2018 at 1:42 pm Dan, Us East Coasters have a distinct disadvantage when it comes to these Night Shift posts, but you with that screwy schedule I guess can take advantage. Or we just post a lot during the daytime anyway. 🙂 JoelG says: January 30, 2018 at 1:42 pm Yeah everyone knows it’s fake. It’s comic relief for me. Laughter is good medicine for the melancholy. Go Eagles! 🦅 Dan from Georgia says: January 30, 2018 at 2:01 pm Honestly, I will have a hard time rooting for the Eagles since they beat the Vikings…but I cannot for the life of me root for the Pats. Congratulations to the Eagles anyways…they really deserve this. I guess, as a native Minnesotan, I am rooting for the cold weather!!! Ha! (yeah, I know it’s an indoor game, but the fans will just HAVE to go outside at some point!) Martin Luther's Disciple says: January 30, 2018 at 2:26 pm Kevin H – if you ever get the chance, take the kids. I took my kids 6 or 7 times in the 80s – it was not the big production of today. My 11 yr old grandson loves WWE and can identify who is coming out by the playing of a couple of bars from their walk out music. I was going to take him a couple of years ago when they came to the Staples center but they wanted $180 per ticket. Add to that $25 parking and the gas money – we watched on TV. JoelG says: January 30, 2018 at 3:03 pm As heartbreaking as it was for Vikings fans, remember it could be worse…. http://youtu.be/U7rPIg7ZNQ8 Jeff Sheckstein says: January 30, 2018 at 8:00 pm MLD. I still have an autographed picture of Shirley Hardman, as she’s calling off the jam. Loved Richie Valaderez also. My favorite was Freddie Blassie, but Mr. Moto was truly a “scientific wrestler.” Barr Clothing was the primary sponsor of wrestling and roller derby at the Olympic, which worked out great for me as my Dad was also in the men’s clothing business and Dick Geese, owner of Barr, was a good friend. So I would be ringside for the cage matches. Michael, wrassling and roller derby are no more fake than watching MSNBC or Fox News, but far more entertaining. Such high minded snobbery will not impress me. LOL filbertz says: January 30, 2018 at 8:38 pm not a wrestling fan, though nothing against it…just never got onboard and once the train left the station it’s just too hard to catch up. Kind of like skate boarding. Or tattoos. Or Game of Thrones. filbertz says: January 30, 2018 at 8:43 pm JoelG–yes it could be worse, one could be a Lions fan. Martin Luther's Disciple says: January 30, 2018 at 8:49 pm Jeff, more common ground in our youth. I worked several summers downtown LA with my zayda in the schmatta industry. 1964-67 Dumas of California. Tickets to all events as the shippers would bid (bribe) for the business JoelG says: January 30, 2018 at 9:06 pm Stafford is solid. Gotta get that O-line fixed and open some holes for Abdullah. Defense was pretty good last year and getting Patricia is huge. Chin up filbertz! It won’t be long for the Lions to turn it around. John 20:29 says: January 30, 2018 at 9:22 pm MLD, there used to be a big delicatessen down there with the BEST cornedbeef on kaiser rolls…. hope it was still operating for your generation can’t remember the name Jeff Sheckstein says: January 30, 2018 at 9:26 pm MLD From 1972-1973 I rep’ed a denim leisure suit line and sweat her line out of the merchandise mart. Raised at Dorman’s, later Dorman Winthrop Men’s Clothing then in the Valley and South La Cienega Blvd in Culver City. Schmata, Schmata, Schmata…can’t give it away on Seventh Avenue. Shattered by Rolling Stones. Jeff Sheckstein says: January 30, 2018 at 9:37 pm John 20:29 Are you talking about the LA Blades? John 20:29 says: January 30, 2018 at 9:52 pm Jeff, name doesn’t ring a bell, but I was a teenager so it could have been (my mother was a buyer – women’s ready to wear)… they actually had a mezzanine and was very warehousish – jammed packed at lunch and I think I liked my sandwich on rye back then … it was piled so high, it was hard to get your mouth around it and always came with a delicious kosher dill pickle Jeff Sheckstein says: January 30, 2018 at 9:55 pm I meant the LA hockey team you referenced. For me, deli was Factor’s, Cantor’s, Nate n Al’s and Beverlywood Deli on Robertson Blvd. John 20:29 says: January 31, 2018 at 9:33 am Jeff 🙂 … i thot that was a weird name for a deli lol – i only ate there a few times, but the corned beef was memorable and piled high – the only name that comes to mind is Billy’s but i think that was the deli in Glendale – good corned beef there, but not as good ice hockey had to google the name, it was the Monarchs… this was the late 1940s, the family had a hardware store and saw to it that my grandparents (i lived with them) had TV early on – i then transferred my loyalty to the Los Angeles Rams and they were my heroes thru my teen years i apologize for inserting a trip down memory lane into the night shift (but i did so in the daytime?) Dan from Georgia says: January 31, 2018 at 6:14 pm To prove I’m not absolutely obsessed with football, I freely admit here that I have a hierarchy of NFL teams that I’ll root for, but not die with, if my Vikings don’t make the playoffs or win…but it’s so convoluted that’s it cannot be diagrammed here….let’s just say that the Packers and the Cowboys are NOT on that flowchart. filbertz says: January 31, 2018 at 6:35 pm got a new puppy today–border collie/blue heeler–to fill the void left by the late, great Trigger. This one is a female and we’re leaning to “Ruby” for a name. Still hard to transition, guess I’m still feeling the loss of the best dog I’d ever been around. But this one is sweet and friendly…so I’ll be alright. JoelG says: January 31, 2018 at 7:18 pm Dan, it must’ve been surreal to have Favre as the Vikes quarterback. I hope the Pats aren’t on your flowchart! That’s great fil! I keep telling myself we will go a couple years without a dog after our previous Golden Retriever dies but I know there will be a big hole in my life. Congrats on the new pup! JoelG says: January 31, 2018 at 7:20 pm Not previous… current. Not sure where that came from. Stupid autocorrect. Captain Kevin says: January 31, 2018 at 7:27 pm JD at 8:39am, You’re speaking a language that I recall with fondness…Loved both roller games and wrestling. Names forever branded in my mind, in addition to those mentioned: John Tolos, Victor Rivera, Ernie Ladd, Mil Mascaras…Ronnie Rains, Danny Reilly, Ralphie Valaderas, Shirley Hardman. All roads lead to the Olympic!! Dan from Georgia says: January 31, 2018 at 7:27 pm JoelG…the Pats aren’t on the chart either, but they haven’t risen/sunk to the Packers/Cowboys level…yet…If the Patriots play the Packers ever in the Big Game…I’ll probably root for a blackout. And it was odd/surreal having Farve as a Viking QB! Although there were many Vikings fans who welcomed him. Captain Kevin says: January 31, 2018 at 7:56 pm Hadn’t read the rest of the thread before adding my bit of nostalgia. filbertz says: January 31, 2018 at 8:57 pm puppy was more my wife’s idea as far as timing…I was thinking spring/summer, but she’s sweet and smart. (both wife and puppy) Leave a Reply Cancel reply Your Comment You may use these HTML tags and attributes: <a href="" title=""> <abbr title=""> <acronym title=""> <b> <blockquote cite=""> <cite> <code> <del datetime=""> <em> <i> <q cite=""> <s> <strike> <strong> Name (required) E-mail (required) URI Notify me of follow-up comments by email.
