thumbnail.aspxGIVE US APPROPRIATE YIELDING
God of our mothers and fathers long gone and treasured,
God of our grandchildren yet to be and awaited,
God of our years, our days, and even this moment:
Our lives are deeply rooted in miracles before us,
Our faith is richly set in courage running thick,
Our vocation is shaped by all those
who have risked for your purposes.

And now, in our remembering, we are made mindful
of our own place of call, and our own time of obedience.
We pray for ourselves and for your whole church,
courage beyond our easier timidity,
vision beyond our present tense,
restlessness beyond our steady settlements, and yielding beyond our will to manage.

Give us appropriate yielding that we may be like our remembered ones in freedom and in love for you.

We pray in the name of Jesus whom we remember until he comes again.

Amen.

  1. I started my new job on Friday. I was supposed to start tomorrow but the boss likes me and trusts me to do his job. I got my last paycheck yesterday from the company I worked for for ten and a half years. Over the last few months they held back a lot of money but at least I got something. My church paid July rent. (I didn’t ask them to. Someone I told [or someone my wife told] told the pastor and he did it.) Friends call to see how we’re doing. One friend sent a card. I worked a total of 6 days in June and July. Enough to live on. I had a lot of time off which was nice and the amount the Lord wanted me to have. So I’m praising God in all things.

  2. God bless you, Gary.

  3. Thanks, Michael. Don’t you ever get any time off? 🙂

  4. Gary,

    Not very often. 🙂

  5. Gary, that’s really a great story about God and His providing. Church how it should be done, thank you for sharing.

  6. Pray for my sister, Amy.
She is going through a tough time.
She is in the middle of a divorce from an abusive husband. She had shut all of the family out earlier, but luckily we are all coming back together now as his influence is gone.
He has two of the kids right now and she has one.
Earlier this year, my mother called DHS and it seemed to drive a rift farther between my sister and mother, but it turned out for the best.
Because DHS investigated, he admitted to them that he abused them all and now chances look good for her getting all the kids eventually. She actually thanked Momma for calling DHS.
Just pray for the best for her and the kids.

  7. Wonderful testimony, Gary! It’s very encouraging to read a good report on the church!

  8. I love these prayers of Brueggemann.

  9. London,

I’m glad at least one person besides me does… 🙂

  10. I do, I do!

  11. Gary…praising along with the others and praying.

Derek…praying for your sister and especially for the kids and all the family. Praying, as you said, for the best…for wisdom and for protection and for grace.

  12. Derek–praying for your sister Amy and your whole family as you minister to her

    Gary–very happy for you!

  13. Derek, praying

  14. These prayers encourage my heart too! Derek I’m praying for Amy and her kids today.

  15. Sarah,

I would hope you do…after all, you made the introduction to me. 🙂

  16. Praying for the list…and remember me in your prayers as well as I need wisdom for some direction toward an income.

  17. We are having a brutal night with smoke from the forest fires…it’s really getting to me.
We can’t even see the surrounding hills through the smoke.
We need some wind or rain…and none is in the forecast.

  18. Michael…continuing to pray for income for you…..and fresh air, too.

  19. Michael – 😉 Continuing to pray for your area and all are who are feeling the effect of these fires.

Praying today as well for Erunner who is not able to go to his uncle’s funeral…for peace and for grace and for mercy in his mourning. Praying for his wife as she goes…

Praying this morning for Derek’s sister Amy, for her household as they awake, for peace to settle in and for the children to know grace and peace this morning rather than fear. Praying for wisdom and for courage there. Praying as well for the father to know what the heart of a father is rather than the heart of an aggressor.

Praying for Gary in his new job today that his favor with the boss continues and that his presence brings joy and refreshment.

Praying for this place, this blog, today as well…that God will season our conversations with maturity, with grace and mercy and with wisdom and knowledge. Praying that we will not engage as immature youths at the dinner table…constantly having to be scolded…but our conversations with be seasoned with maturity and grace and even restraint along with familiarity and humor and challenge that comes with community. Praying that we will be marked by desiring the best for each other and that we will grow…and be a place where conversation is desired, rather than a place where it has to be battled for.

Praying for each who are struggling this day…whether with health or finances or family…for mercy today, for encouragement just for this day. For that moment of refreshment and of hope and of insight and o way being made that will open the door to solutions..

Praying for those who are rejoicing this day…may your testimony and your praise reach our ears and carry us and refresh us all!!

  20. I could use some prayer.
I’m kind of discouraged and disheartened by some stuff this year just when I need to be engaged and excited.
Don’t have the mental or emotional energy I need for this next week.

Also, and way more importantly, there’s a young guy in ICU who was stabbed day before yesterday who could use prayer.
I don’t know his name, just his friend who told me about it.

  21. London…praying for you. And praying for the young man as well.

  22. My uncle’s funeral is today and my wife is taking my mother to attend. Our daughter who lives with us along with her husband and daughter seems to have just gone into labor. Her husband is 2 hours away and so we’re trying to line everything up in case this is really time for our new granddaughter to arrive as we’ve had a few false alarms. So it’s a bit hectic now as there’s so much potentially going on. If this is it please pray for all to go well. Thank you.

  23. Praying for you and yours, Erunner.
    London, you too.
Thankful for both of you here!

  24. Please pray for a co-workers daughter, Shanna, who at 21, had a blood clot in her brain. Once the clot was removed, she is experiencing high cerebral spinal fluid pressure and great pain and the doctors cannot assure her that this will ever dissipate. Her Father, my co-worker, is understandably distressed. They also need to find someone to foster her 2 young pitbull dogs. Please pray for Shanna and her family–Thanks!

  25. My wife reported that the funeral was very nice and she got to talk with my aunt and cousins. One of my cousins wants to come see me and I’m happy for that.

Our daughter is so frustrated. The labor pains have been constant since yesterday but she’s still here at home. Hopefully things will proceed to a happy birth very soon.

Thank you for your prayers Linnea and Sarah and thank you for what you shared on another thread London.

Prayed for your friend Linnea. So many people we know nothing of who daily are battling for their sanity and lives. Yet so often I am not thankful for the things I have. Life can be so hard and seemingly unfair for so many. Yet our God is in control. Gosh how we can’t ever lose sight of that fact.

  26. praying for all this evening.

  27. Our daughter is on the way to the hospital and they will either be admitted or be sent home. I think this is it though.

I have a praise report. Growing up there was a bully who terrorized our neighborhood and me in a huge way. I was terrified of him. He pulled a knife on my friend and I once and another time showed up at our house in a stolen car offering me a ride. Rumor has it he was jailed for murder and life went on for all of us.

Well yesterday he sent me a friend request on FB. This guy that would beat up my brother and all other kinds of mayhem wanted to be my friend. This evening I sent him a long and detailed message on how he impacted my life in such a miserable way. I concluded by saying I forgave him now that I had the opportunity. I concluded by stating if he still wanted to be a friend he could respond and I would add him as a friend. This was his response.

“Hi Alan. Thank U For Expressing Yourself. Tommorrow When I Can Access A Comp I Will Write U A Long Response. I Am So Sorry For The Fear I Instiled In U. God Bless U And Your Family.”

I can’t express how good I feel and to what lies ahead in our communications. Feel like I slayed a dragon!!

  28. Erunner! Wow! Oh the amazing grace of God in people’s lives. Thank you for sharing that.

  29. Wow, E!! That is amazing. Praying for your interaction with him…and praying for your daughter. Hoping to hear good news today regarding her and the baby.

Linnea…have been praying for your friend.

  30. Thank you Nonnie and Sarah. Afton was born a few hours ago weighing in at 8 pounds and 8 ounces with darling chubby cheeks and a head full of black hair. Mommy, daddy, and Afton are having alone time that’s going much longer than expected and will mean I won’t be able to see them till tomorrow.

Having married a Mexican it was my dream to have a brown baby but our three were all fair skinned. I finally got my little Mexican albeit a generation delayed!! 🙂

  31. Congratulations Erunner!

  32. Praying for all on the list.
    Congratulations Erunner!

  33. Oh, and thanks to all that have prayed for all involved with my sister. Really hoping that is going to turn out better.

  34. Thank you London and Derek.

This evening I led a Bible study at the senior center where my mother lives. An 87 year old woman named Eileen hugged me tightly when I arrived and asked if I could visit her some time. I got her phone number telling her I would and promised her that soon I would bring her to our home to eat with our family. She was close to tears.

Of the four who were there two are in their late 70’s and two in their late 80’s. These people have lived long and have or are currently suffering much physically. To sit and hear a man tonight describe how he had to make the choice to pull life support for his quadriplegic daughter 18 years ago was sobering and the first his friends had heard of it. He takes care of his wife daily which takes hours all while he has bladder cancer and other ailments. He was encouraging me tonight.

The elderly in so many cases are forgotten and discarded by families and society. It seems to me the wisdom and life experiences they have had may be neglected in many churches while they may be just the ones to help disciple the younger folks in the church.

While there’s talk of strange fire going on we had no piano player so for half and hour it might have seemed amusing as we worked our way through the hymnal so out of sync and out of tune. Yet I believe God was pleased. What a week. Thanks for your prayers.

  35. Holly was taken to the hospital by ambulance today and this evening they have discovered lesions on her brain.
    We are awaiting further information.
    Prayers coveted.

  36. Oh no. Praying for her Michael.

  37. Oh no! Lord have mercy on our dear sister Holly

  38. oh my goodness, praying

  39. Dusty, Praying you are well.

  40. An update on Holly…they have confirmed that she had at least one stroke…and four discs have ruptured. She is still undergoing tests and covets your prayers.

  41. Praying for Holly!

  42. Wow, sorry to read this about Holly.

May the Lord extend his peace and healing to her.

  43. Any updates on Holly???

  44. Holly is home, but in extreme pain.
We have to follow up on all the conditions, but pain management is huge right now.
Thank you all for your love and prayers!
